Summer is heating up, and many of us are enjoying a much welcomed break from our studies. Even so, for many homeschooling parents, this is also the time of year that we plan for the upcoming school year. Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, and…Science! Let’s chat about Science. For those of you with middle school aged students, which curriculum will you be using to transition them to the high school sciences? Perhaps you find yourself unsure, and a bit perplexed as you consider the options. Never fear, because the Homeschool Review Crew is here to help! Some of our members have been using Exploring Creation with General Science, 3rd Edition, by the award winning company, Apologia. We’re excited to share their reviews with you.
Reviewers received the basic set, which includes the following:
- Hardcover textbook
- Spiral bound Student Notebook
- Softcover Solutions and Test Manual with one test packet
Created with 7th grade students in mind, lessons are Biblically centered, and utilize a four day weekly schedule. The 3rd edition has been updated to better accommodate middle school students, as they transition to high school, and prepare for the ACT and SAT tests. This General Science course is intended to be the first science class taken in junior high. The curriculum includes various branches of science including:
- Astronomy
- Meteorology
- Oceanography
- Earth Study
- Geology
- Paleontology
- Environmental Science
The material will be presented through experiments, hands on work, and tests. There are also helps to aid parents and teachers in discerning how to effectively grade students.
The Student Workbook works in conjunction with the textbook, and is broken down into the following sections:
- Daily lesson plan
- Daily, detailed assignment schedule
- Pages for notes
- On Your Own questions
- Various pages for notes to record results
- Creation Connection pages that reflect intellectual, emotional, and spiritual thoughts to activities
